Yamini Kalluri - Modern Indian Dance Alongside Baroque Music
Presented by the Capital Region Community Foundation.

Across Time: Dall’Abaco Reimagined
Jamie Gallupe, Baroque Cello
Yamini Kalluri, Dance & Choreography

What happens when an eighteenth-century cello meets an Indian dancer in twenty-first-century Lansing?

Baroque cellist Jamie Gallupe and Indian crossover dancer and choreographer Yamini Kalluri come together for a new interpretation of Joseph Marie Clément Ferdinand dall’Abaco’s 11 Capricci for Solo Cello. Written by a composer and virtuoso cellist born in 1710, these works become the starting point for a journey across centuries, continents, and movement traditions.

Kalluri responds to the live cello through her evolving movement language rooted in Kuchipudi and Indian classical dance while drawing from ballet, modern dance, and the elegance and theatricality of Baroque dance. Rather than recreating the eighteenth century, the performance imagines its music traveling through time and encountering the body of a contemporary Indian dancer.

Ornamentation, gesture, rhythm, footwork, line, and theatricality reveal unexpected conversations between European Baroque music and Indian dance traditions. Gallupe brings the historical sound world of the Baroque cello to life while Kalluri allows that world to transform physically before the audience.

Across Time asks us to imagine art not as something fixed in history, but as something that can travel, encounter new cultures, and continually become new again.
